Low Cost Dental Care

For Adults

Champaign County Dental Referral Program
Operated by Champaign County Health Care Consumers (CCHCC)
44 E. Main Street, Suite 208, Champaign 61820
352-6533

CCHCC operates the Dental Referral Program, which enrolls 6-8 new patients each month. Residents of Champaign County who fall below 185% of the poverty line are eligible, although children 3-18 years old who reside within Champaign or Urbana will be referred to the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (see listing below). The initial appointment with a participating local dentist will include an oral exam and x-rays for $15. This fee must be paid in cash at the time of the appointment. If additional work is needed, the patient will pay based on a sliding scale fee of 40%, 60%, or 80% of the dentist's usual fees. The fee level will be based upon the client's income and family size, and will be determined in advance at the CCHCC office during an eligibility screening. Patients must be screened to establish their eligibility for this program. At times, there can be a wait of up to several months to see a dentist.

Medicaid Dental Coverage
Doral Dental Services
(888) 286-2447

Doral Dental Services administers the dental services program through Public Aid and they can make referrals to dentists accepting Medicaid in Illinois

There are two providers in this area known to serve Medicaid patients:

Illini Dental
14 E. Anthony Drive, Champaign
359-8697

Drs. William and Phillip Jones
1 S. Main Street, Villa Grove
832-7011

There is a serious shortage of dentists who accept patients with medical cards. According to the Illinois Department of Public Aid, wide ranges of dental services are available to children under the age of 20. However, only limited "emergency" services are available to adults over 21. "Emergency" services are those needed to treat pain with the teeth, palate, or any other problem that requires immediate attention and is appropriately treated by a dentist. This generally includes extractions, fillings, and crowns. Dentists may also make referrals to oral surgeons who will accept payment from Public Aid.

Dentures

Dr. Scott Brewer, C-U Denture Service
2110 N. Market, Champaign
351-3035

Provides dentures at reduced rates -- about 40% of the usual cost. Requires payment in full at time of service. Other dentists may discount their dentures for low-income or elderly patients.

Oral Surgery

Frances Nelson Community Health Center
1306 N. Carver Drive, Champaign
356-1558 (After hours: 383-3233)

Frances Nelson can make referrals to oral surgeons at Carle and Christie Clinics who will honor their sliding scale payment rate (through the Integrated Services Network) and/or accept Medicaid. When calling Frances Nelson, patients should emphasize they are in need of care for a medical condition, like a mouth infection, and that they do not need dental services directly from Frances Nelson.
